Our belief

Ashtrays alone are not enough — you have to engage the users

The real problem isn't the equipment. It's the engagement of smokers themselves. Our approach tackles this with three complementary levers.

They trust us

"We have 4 sites in the Paris region, including a headquarters in Boulogne with a terrace overlooking the boulevard, very visible. Since Easy to Change took over, it has become a point we no longer raise in our monthly meetings."

Facilities Manager Leased office portfolio — Île-de-France, France

"We switched over in 2023 when we went through Ecovadis. The quarterly waste transfer note was exactly what we were missing to tick the hazardous-waste box. Quick to roll out."

Technical Director SME mechanical engineering — Northern France

"We brought them on for the municipal park in the town centre. Our communications team reused the visuals from their kit for our autumn cleanliness campaign."

Frequently asked questions

All you need to know about cigarette butt recycling at work

Answers to the questions facilities, CSR and EHS teams actually ask

Can cigarette butts really be recycled?

Yes, in two complementary ways. Material recycling is handled by our partner MéGO, the first French plant dedicated to cigarette butt recycling, based in Brittany. The cigarette butt is washed with rainwater in a closed loop, then separated into two fractions: the cellulose acetate filter is thermo-compressed into granulate slabs used to produce street furniture (benches, pocket ashtrays, signage), while the residual tobacco and ashes go into an industrial composting stream.

Energy recovery is the other available path, more cost-effective: cigarette butts are sent to certified regional incineration units that produce heat and electricity. You choose the stream that fits your CSR strategy and budget. Discover the full value chain →

What are a company's legal obligations regarding cigarette butts?

Since the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive 2019/904 and its national transpositions (French AGEC law, German EWKFondsG, Belgian VLAREM, Dutch Activiteitenbesluit, Swiss VVEA), producers and waste holders — including all companies — are legally responsible for the management of their cigarette butts, considered hazardous waste under EU waste law. This responsibility covers collection, secure storage and compliant treatment through to disposal.

Lack of a compliant set-up exposes companies to fines of up to €75,000 at classified industrial sites, and possible criminal prosecution in the most serious cases. Industrial sites are inspected by national environmental agencies and must be able to produce a waste transfer note for every flow. Beyond the legal framework, the CSRD and the Ecovadis grid now include cigarette butt management among their criteria. Details on your obligations →

How much does the Easy to Change service cost?

Pricing depends on four main factors: the cigarette butt volume generated at your site (linked to the number of employees and visitors), the desired collection frequency (weekly, monthly, on demand), the number of sites to equip and the operating model selected (full Easy Premium service or in-house Easy Eco emptying).

For a medium-sized office site (150 to 200 employees, 4 smoking areas), the budget is generally between €1,200 and €2,800 net per year, all included: hardware, delivery, installation, collections, waste transfer note traceability and quarterly reporting. Multi-site clients benefit from sliding-scale pricing. The audit and quote are free and without commitment. Use our calculator above to receive an estimate by email. See the detailed pricing →

Which ashtray should I choose for my company?

The choice depends on three criteria: the daily cigarette butt volume, the area of use (exposed outdoor, covered shelter, building entrance, terrace) and the desired image (understated, visible, customised to brand colours).

The Easy Premium ashtray is sized for high-traffic sites: 10,000 cigarette butt capacity, certified fire-safe design, lifetime guarantee on hardware, manufactured in Picardie. Available in three standard finishes (Claret Violet, Moss Green, Ultramarine Blue) or full customisation. The Easy Eco models (Wall-mounted, Free-standing, Vote) suit lower-traffic sites or spaces where in-house emptying is feasible. Our free on-site audit identifies the optimal configuration for each smoking area. Request an audit →

What traceability for my CSR report and audits?

Every quarter, you receive a complete traceability report in PDF and CSV: number of cigarette butts collected per site (in units and kilograms), CO₂ equivalent avoided through material recycling, waste transfer note archived for 5 years for each collection, treatment stream used, recycling certificate issued by MéGO or energy-recovery certificate depending on the path chosen.

This data is structured for direct integration into your CSRD reports (EU sustainability reporting directive), your Ecovadis submission, and your ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 audits. On request, we also provide an export format compatible with the main CSR reporting tools on the market. Request an audit →

How quickly is the service operational?

The standard time between signing the quote and full commissioning is 3 to 6 weeks for a single site. The sequence is as follows: on-site audit within 5 to 10 days of your request, quote within 24 hours of the audit, ashtrays manufactured in Picardie within 2 to 3 weeks (hardware is handmade, on demand), delivery and installation within 7 days of manufacture, first collection scheduled the week following installation.

For multi-site projects or urgent orders, we offer a staggered roll-out that starts on priority sites within the first week. The hardware is guaranteed for life: you never need to budget for replacement in your multi-year planning.

What is the difference between Easy Premium and Easy Eco?

The Easy Premium plan is a complete turnkey service: our teams come to your site to empty the ashtrays as soon as they are full, at the frequency agreed during the audit. Your staff never has to handle the cigarette butts. The ashtray has a capacity of 10,000 cigarette butts and is available in three designer finishes (Claret Violet, Moss Green, Ultramarine Blue) or full customisation.

The Easy Eco plan operates more autonomously: your teams empty the ashtrays into secure drums that we provide, and we come once a year to collect the drums for treatment. The ashtray has a capacity of 2,000 cigarette butts and exists in three models (Wall-mounted, Free-standing, Vote), all in anthracite grey finish. Easy Eco suits lower-traffic sites or constrained budgets. Both plans include waste transfer note traceability and quarterly reporting.

Is the service compatible with public procurement?

Yes. Easy to Change supports municipalities, public bodies, regional and national administrations through the public procurement procedure matching their thresholds. Our premium ashtray excluding collection sits around €1,000 per unit, which places it below the formal procurement threshold for most public buyers, simplifying group orders.

On request we provide a standard response file with detailed technical specifications, Made in France supporting documents, material certifications, sample waste transfer note, public references and general terms of sale. We also support public buyers in drafting the technical specifications when useful. Our French manufacturing and 100 % integrated French value chain are assets for the environmental and short-circuit criteria now embedded in public procurement. Public sector solutions →

How does smoker awareness work?

Our belief is clear: 50% of cigarette butts smoked outdoors still end up on the ground, even where ashtrays are present. Installing equipment without working on behaviour is not enough. We offer three awareness levers, adjustable to your internal culture.

The first is a visual communication kit (posters, stickers, floor signage) deployed around the smoking areas during installation. The second is a 45-minute interactive workshop run on site, combining cigarette butt pollution data with a concrete demonstration of the recycling chain. The third is a social nudge mechanism: every properly deposited cigarette butt triggers a symbolic donation to a partner charity chosen by your staff. This last lever achieves on average a 70% improvement in deposit rate within six months. Programme details →

Where are Easy to Change ashtrays manufactured?

Our ashtrays are manufactured by hand, in our workshop rooted in Picardie (Somme), where Easy to Change has been based from the start. Each piece is made on demand by a team of craftspeople who handle every stage: laser cutting of steel sheets, bending, welding, oven-cured epoxy paint finish. Manufacturing time is two to three weeks depending on the queue.

The choice of French manufacturing and local craftsmanship isn't incidental: it guarantees full material traceability, no import-related carbon footprint, and a recognised expertise that backs our lifetime guarantee on hardware. It also makes brand-colour customisation possible without a prohibitive surcharge. Since our MéGO recycling chain is also 100% French (plant in Brittany), the ashtray loop — from manufacture to processing of collected cigarette butts — stays entirely within French borders. More about Easy to Change →

Is the service available across continental Europe?

Yes. Easy to Change covers France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland through our logistics partnership with clikeco and a network of regional operators. More than 700 sites are already equipped across these countries, from major metropolitan areas (Paris, Lyon, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin, Zurich) to more rural territories.

For multi-country accounts, we offer an optimised route that groups collections by geographic zone to reduce transport emissions and guarantee consistent lead times. Whatever your location within our coverage area, the lead time between installation and first collection is identical. See installed sites by sector →

What happens to a cigarette butt after collection? The chain in detail

The chain has five main steps. Step 1 — Collection: our teams (or yours under the Eco plan) empty the ashtrays at your site, at the agreed frequency. Step 2 — Sorting: on arrival at the MéGO plant in Brittany, the cigarette butts are separated from any other waste (paper, plastics, chewing gum) so only the useful material is processed.

Step 3 — Decontamination: the filters are washed with rainwater in a closed loop. The plant uses only 4 m³ of water per year thanks to a treatment and reinjection system. Step 4 — Transformation: the decontaminated filters are thermo-compressed into recycled plastic granulate slabs, ready to be shaped. Step 5 — New product: the slabs become street furniture, pocket ashtrays, public benches, in line with the principle of circularity. Full chain diagram →
